What made it possible was a famous Bollywood song penned by Gulzar saab, sung by Sukhwinder Singh & Sapna Awasthi, composed by AR Rahman, picturised on Shahrukh Khan & Malaika Arora and choreographed by Farah Khan.. Yes you guessed it right.. its ever popular “Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan” from Dil Se.. What Norman Kamaru did is, lip synced and danced to the audio of Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan and made a video for friends that was uploaded on Youtube. The funny video immediately caught attention of many.. Justin Bieber, Rebecca Black & now Norman Kamaru was already a YouTube star just in a couple of days (in Indonesia ofc)

The most significant aspect of the video was that it was captured when Norman Kamaru was on official duty and was in official police dress in presence of other staff at the police station.

Once the video became popular, the senior officials immediately took it seriously and threatened to suspend him with immediate affect. Also the Chief of mobile brigade tried to crack down on the video uploader.. The action of senior police officials created a nation wide wave in favor of Norman Kamaru with people all around nation (also politicians joined it) reacted strongly opposing any action and justified Kamaru’s actions. The wave was so strong in favor so that the officials had to revoke the punishment. (Watch the original video)

[At the time of writing the video has already received close to two million hits, last night it was one million, cumulatively speaking the video hits are more than 3.5 million, that just in last 14 days]

By now Norman Kamaru was already a super star (just in the space of 4-5 days, a Facebook fan site was setup which has 2.5 lac fans).. and Chhaiyyan Chhaiyaan was on the lips of all walks of citizens. He has already been invited to many Talk Shows (one of the talk shows (Bukan Empat) which was ranked 64 in TV ratings of Indonesia, jumped to Ist place after they invited Kamaru on the show). His own unit honored him & he got to perform in front of them officially. There are talks for many TV Shows, cutting of an album and even a film!

There are many significant aspects of his interesting story.. showing human side of police, unearthing of a superstar from nowhere, the power of social media tools & ofc supremacy of public. And the after effects are many, in Indonesia, you can find almost everyone singing Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan, people from all walks of life, singing, playing & dancing on this .. There is a sharp rise in interest for Bollywood all over the country in last one week. The song is rocking the nation and one can also attribute a little to the magic of the sound of two words “Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan”

(This is a real story shared by Sunjoy Shekhar (who lives in Indonesia and known for translating Gulzar saab’s songs in to a book titled 100 lyrics) and he specifically mentions that everyone around him in Indonesia is so mad about Chhaiyya Chhaiyya, from his maid to his driver to almost everyone he see on street. Have organised an online quiz on August 18, 2010 on Gulzar saab’s 76th Birthday and had some real good participation. Everybody participated in the quiz had good fun and I hope they really enjoyed it. Posting the Quiz Questions and Answers as some of you who could not participate due to time difference.. बावजूद इस बात के कि मुझे हिंदी समाचार पत्रों में बढ़ते जा रहे अंग्रेजी के प्रयोग से चिढ़ होती है, मैं यहाँ अपनी इस टिप्पणी के लिए अंग्रेजी वाक्यांश का प्रयोग कर रहा हूं। असल में यह वाक्यांश ब्रिटिश अर्थशास्त्री ई.एफ़. शूमाखर की प्रख्यात किताब का शीर्षक है। मुझे लगा कि जो बात मैं कहना चाह रहा हूं, वस इस शीर्षक से ही सबसे बेहतर तरीके से अभिव्यक्त हो रही है, इसलिए न चाहते हुए भी इस शीर्षक का प्रयोग कर लिया है।

जयपुर में इन दिनों पाँचवां जयपुर लिटरेचर फ़ेस्टिवल चल रहा है, जिसे आयोजकों ने दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा साहित्योत्सव कहा है। यहां सब कुछ बड़ा है, चकाचौंध कर देने वाला, चमत्कृत कर देने वाला। इस साहित्योत्सव पे बहुत कुछ लिखा कहा जा रहा है, और यह स्वाभाविक भी है।

लेकिन इसी के साथ इसी जयपुर में आज सुबह एक छोटा सा आयोजन हुआ, जिसकी कहीं किसी किस्म की कोई चर्चा नहीं हुई। होनी भी नहीं थी। आयोजक चाहते ही नहीं थे। संयोग से मुझे इस आयोजन में उपस्थित रहने का अवसर मिला और मुझे लगा कि श्रेष्ठता, उत्कृष्टता और सार्थकता के लिए बड़ा होना कतई ज़रूरी नहीं है। अगर सही दृष्टि हो तो बहुत छोटा होकर भी सार्थक हुआ जा सकता है और इसीलिए ये शीर्षक…

असल में एक बहुत निजी किस्म का संगठन है, ’गुलज़ार फ़ैन्स क्लब’, जैसा कि नाम से ही जाहिर है यह, शायर गुलज़ार के प्रशंसकों का एक समूह है। इस क्लब ने जयपुर में गुलज़ार साहब के आगमन का लाभ उठाते हुए आज सुब एक अनौपचारिक गोष्ठी का आयोजन लिया और मुझे भी उसमें उपस्थित रहने का अवसर एक मित्र के सौजन्य से मिल गया। वहां जाकर मुझे आश्चर्य हुआ कि पूरे देश के अलग अलग हिस्सों से कोई पचासेक गुलज़ार प्रेमी सिर्फ़ इस गोष्ठी के लिए जयपुर आए थे। कोई मुंबई से, कोई पुणे से, कोई अहमदाबाद से, कोई दिल्ली से, और ना जाने कहां कहां से, सिर्फ़ इस मक़सद के साथ कि कुछ वक्त गुलज़ार साहब के सानिध्य में बिताया जाए, इनके अलावा बहुत थोड़े से हम स्थानीय लोग और थे, कुछ संगीत प्रेमी, कुछ और।

गुलज़ार साहब ने इस गोष्ठी के लिए ये सुझाया था कि बजाय इसके कि सिर्फ़ वे ही बोलें, क्यॊं ना कुछ युवा अपनी-अपनी रचनाओं का पाठ करें! और यही हुआ भी, कोई पन्द्रह युवाओं ने अपनी लिखी कविताएं पढ़ीं खास बात यह कि इनमें से अधिकांश तकनीक से जुड़े और अपनी अपनी ज़िन्दगियों में सुस्थापित युवा थे। यानि ये आम हिंदी कवि से भिन्न लगे थे और इसलिए इनकी कविताओं का मुहावरा भी आम हिंदी कविता से भिन्न था।
जिन लोगों ने वहां अपनी कविताएं पढ़ीं उनमें मेरा जाना-पहचान सिर्फ़ एक नाम था – जयपुर के युवा कवि प्रभात का, शेष सब कविता की दुनिया के नवजात थे, लेकिन उनकी रचनाएं सुनते हुए सबसे प्रीतिकर प्रतीति तब हुई कि साहित्य और विशेषकर कविता के प्रति रुझान और अनुराग अभी भी शेष है, इस प्रतीति का महत्व इस बात से और बढ़ जाता है कि हम लोग अक्सर इस बात का शोक मनाया करते हैं कि हिंदी में रचनाकारों की नई पीढ़ी विरल होती जा रही है। यानि लोग कविताएं पढ़ भी रहे हैं, लिख भी रहे हैं। मेरे खयाल से इस बात से कोई फ़र्क नहीं पढ़ना चाहिये कि इन कवियों में से कुछेक पर गुलज़ार शैली की छाप काफ़ी गहरी थी। जैसे जैसे ये लोग और अधिक लिखेंगें पढ़ेंगे, इनकी अपनी शैली विकसित होगी, कलाओं की दुनिया में शुरु शुरु में अपने आदर्श का अनुकरण आम बात है।

इन कवियों के काव्य-पाठ के बाद हामरे शह्र के कुछ जाने पहचाने शायरों फ़ारूक इंजीनियर, आदिल मंसूरी और शीन काफ़ निज़ाम ने भी कुछ रचनाएं पढ़ीं, और फिर गुलज़ार ने अपनी कुछ बहुत गंभीर कविताएं सुनाईं।

और इसके बाद चला चर्चाओं का दौर, उप्सथित युवाओं ने कुछेक सवाल फ़िल्मों मे कविता की स्थिति, समय के साथ कविता में आ रहे परिवर्तनों, हिंदी और उर्दू के अंतरसंबंधो आदि पर किए, जिनके उत्तर गुलज़ार ने बहुत ही सुलझे हुए अंदाज़ में दिए, उनला कहना था कि अगर कविता समय के साथ नहीं बदलेगी, अगर उसकी भाष और बिंब विधान में कोई बदलाव नहीं हुआ तो वह जड़ हो जाएगी। लिपि के मुद्दे पर उनका स्पष्ट मत था कि इस बात से कोई अंतर नहीं पड़ता कि किसी भाषा को किसी दूसरी लिपि में लिखा या पढ़ा जाए। देवनागरी में भी ग़ालिब, ग़ालिब ही रहेंगे।

सभी उपस्थित लोग ये चाहते थे कि गुलज़ार उनके बीच में रहें, उनसे और बतियाया जाए, उनसे और रचनाएं सुनी जाएं’ लेकिन उन्हें दोपहर की फ़्लाइट पकड़नी थी, इसलिए अतृप्ति सभी के मन में बनी रही। मुझे ये छोटा सा अनौपचारिक आयोजन ब्यूटीफुल इस कारण से लगा कि एक तो इससे मेरा ये भ्रम टूटा कि हमारे समाज में साहित्य का स्थान कम होता जा रहा है और विशेषरूप से तकनीकवालों का तो साहित्य से कोई लेना देना ही नहीं, दूसरी बात यह कि कोई कार्यक्रम छोटा होकर भी बहुत सार्थक हो सकता है, बशर्ते आयोजकों के पास सही दृष्टि हो, उनकी नीयत में खोट ना हो और साहित्यकार भी अपनी ओढ़ी हुई गम्भीरता को उतार फेंकने को तैयार हो। हम अपने साहित्यकारों को जिस भंगिमा में देखने के आदी हैं, वह उनके प्रति सम्मान कम और वितृष्णा ज्यादा होती है। उसके विपरीत गुलज़ार यहां अपने सही और मानवीय रूप में थे। ठीक उसी तरह जैसे हमारे घर का कोई बड़ा होता है। इसलिए उनसे सही संवाद स्थापित हो सका और इसीलिए मैनें एक छोटे से अप्रचारित कार्यक्रम पर अपनी टिपाणी के लिए अर्थशास्त्री शूमाखर से उनकी किताब का शीर्षक उधार लिया।
